a different kind of flower farm…
Like you, I adore flowers of all kinds. Growing them or cutting them for a pretty bouquet to give to a friend or for your table~ fresh flowers are a joy!
But what if those same flowers were NATIVE flowers?
What if that NATIVE flower bouquet came from organic plants grown at a local farm or in your own garden? What if those plants also supported pollinators and wildlife?
You’d be protecting wild-growing species for wildlife habitats like native bees and songbirds AND enjoying your bouquet!
Your NATIVE flower bouquet could help others to learn about saving native habitats and pollinators!
Now what if you could grow those same NATIVE flowers in your own garden?
Heck friends…you could even create a Homegrown National Park in your own backyard!
Flowers & Pollinators is where our story begins
For years, I dreamed of expanding my garden and yard into a flower farm filled with roses, cosmos and rows of beautiful flowers.
But I was also concerned about the decline of pollinators, birds and natural habitats that I kept seeing in my hikes along eastern Lake Ontario.
Inspired to act, in 2019 we switched our gardens and plant shopping habits to native species.
But finding true native species was difficult
We either had to drive a 4 hour trip or sort thru tables of non-natives at nurseries in the hopes of finding even one native plant that was also locally grown AND pesticide/neonicotinoid-free
When we did find one often than not it was a NATIVAR, a genetically-altered mass produced ‘knock-off’ of a native plant; made for humans not wildlife…
My growing frustration brought my flower farm dream back to the fore…
Could I create a native flower farm?
With A LOT of MOXIE & a big dash of courage…
I gathered native seeds, soil, and obtained our NYS Nursery Certification.
Garden beds were slowly filled with native plants & propagation stations were made
Boy do pollinators LOVE what we made for them..
Most days standing at the potting bench is being in the middle of a pollinator SUPER HIGHWAY with bees, butterflies & hummingbirds buzzing by!
This farm is proof that if you plant it the pollinators will come!
Now in our 4th year, Lazy Dirt Wildflower Farm is still a small nursery & flower farm
Lazy Dirt Flower Farm is ‘scratch-made’ by using what we have … an old farm, potting bench, and lots of elbow grease…
we are small but mighty!
We now have over 30 native plant species available with more growing up to the farm stand every week!
Lazy Dirt Flower Farm is the only NATIVE PLANT NURSERY in Oswego County licensed by NYS Dept. of Agriculture.
Our native plants are organically grown and propagated here on our farm specifically for eastern Lake Ontario. This means they will flourish in our unique climate including lake effect snow & hot summers.
Growing native plants
We sustainably collect seeds from our farm & local habitats. How?
By collecting less than 2% of a native plants mature seeds.
NEVER collecting from endangered or threatened species
helping to restore habitats by putting grown plants from those harvested seeds back into the area.
The majority of our native plants are perennials, drought tolerant to save water, and are excellent for pollinator gardens. Many are native riparian plants for the eastern Lake Ontario region.
Sharing the joys of gardening for pollinators is our ‘jam’
Gardening for pollinators is FUN!
That’s why you’ll find fun plant sales, garden arts, and special events like our native porch planters & holiday wreath workshops
AND it’s why our annual Winter Gnome Sale gets everyone excited!
So whether you are rookie or an ‘old hat’ to gardening for pollinators with native plants, we are so glad you’ve joined the adventure!
We know the pollinators are too!
