February Cabin Fever & Winter Gardening!
Just because the snow banks are up to the windows here at the farm doesn’t mean I’m not gardening!
Here’s all the farm happenings this February as the cold winds blow yet MORE lake effect snow from Lake Ontario!
Plus my favorite posts to help you plan your 2025 gardening adventures!
Regardless of snow being up to the windows here at the farm and another foot of snow coming thru next Monday….
GARDENING FOR POLLINATORS IS HAPPENING!
It’s a good thing too!
I don’t know about you but after 5 weeks of heavy snows plus flu and a bum shoulder my CABIN FEVER is at an all time high!!! HA-HA)
What’s happening…
Seed heads of 18 more native species are in paper grocery bags eagerly waiting to be cleaned AND cold stratified!
Thank goodness I did the 1st cleaning in November! Since I did most of the seed cleaning early …
It means that SEED SOWING has begun early this year!
All sown plastic & peat free in Earth-friendly Wool Pots and Soil Blocks!
It’s been so delightful I even made a Youtube clip to share with ya!
Sure it may seem early for sowing & growing….
But these species are those that will bloom and feed pollinators in Autumn like hungry Queen bees that hibernate and overwinter here in CNY
By sowing them early, these seedlings can grow over the Summer.
In Autumn, they’ll bloom in time to help migrating pollinators like Monarch butterflies and Hummingbirds ‘stock up’ before their long migration South.
Besides seed sowing, I’m also curating a list of field grown plants for the Spring Native Blooms Boxes!
Spring is right around the corner. In no time at all, I’ll be in the fields digging up your plants and wrapping them up to come home to your garden!
I spent the Summer and Autumn planting the field with LOTS of new native plant species just for your boxes.
Over 600 young plants went into the propagation beds in October!
Under the deep snow they are waiting for Spring’s warmth to resume growing strong roots~
I can’t wait to show you and the pollinators these plants in all their glory!
Plus there’s the native shrubs for our 1st SPRING SHRUB SALE!
YES SERVICEBERRY (Amelanchier arborea) and native roses are on the ‘must have’ list!!
But wait…. there’s more fun happening this February!
The ‘Winter Gardening’ fun happenings includes 2 MORE WINTER SOWING WORKSHOPS!
The three workshops I hosted in January were so much fun sharing how to sow & grow plants without plastics or peat!
And it’s a lovely way to gather online and hear each others habitat gardening plans!
PLUS garden chats are GREAT cabin fever busters!
(Special thanks to everyone who asked for more dates! There may even be a 3rd offered!)
Like you, I’m also planning my garden adventures…
