Aromatic Asters (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium)

from $5.00

A low growing native aster perfect for filling gaps in your pollinator garden! Planted in drifts in between other native plants Aromatic Asters play a vital role in supporting pollinators and birds all year long.

In Summer, as a host plant the foliage provides food and shelter for caterpillars such as as Painted Lady, Pearl Crescents, and Silvery Checkerspots. In Autumn, fragrant purple and yellow flowers provide nectar to many pollinators before hibernation or migration.

In Winter, remaining seed heads feed all sorts of overwintering birds whose ‘snacking’ helps the wind to disperse the seeds in your garden! Nice of them isn’t it!

PLANT DEETS:

  • Native perennial

  • Blooms September thru early November

  • creates waves or mounds 3’ tall, shorter in part shade

  • Average to rocky/sandy well draining soils

  • Full Sun to Part Shade

Here at the farm, I interweave Aromatic Asters with Summer bloomers like Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and Monarda in borders. Growing 2’ in full sun Aromatic Asters provide a green space for many caterpillars to hide. When the blooms of the Monarda and Yarrow are long past the flowers of Aromatic Aster put on a stunning show in Autumn.
