Elderberry supports over 45 species of birds and is the host plant for 33 lepidoptera (moth) species including the beautiful 7" Cecropia moth.

In the wild, you’ll find Common Elderberry growing in along roadsides, bogs, ditches and in riparian thickets along ponds and streams. Often shaded by larger trees and shrubs.

PLANT DEETS:

  • Full to Part Shade

  • Moist to dry soils but happiest in rich moist soils

  • Can reach heights up to 12’ tall and wide

  • Blooms May thru July; Drupes late Summer/early Autumn

  • Elderberry is a fast grower excellent for a native hedge but is a short-lived perennial with root masses producing new shoots. To keep in plants in check in small home gardens, we recommend cutting your Elderberry bush back to the ground every 2-3 years.
