In late Summer- early Autumn, flowers become edible drupes of deep purple berries eaten by humans, birds and other wildlife.

Elderberry supports over 45 species of birds and is the host plant for 33 lepidoptera (moth) species including the beautiful 7" Cecropia moth.

In the wild, you’ll find Common Elderberry growing in along roadsides, bogs, ditches and in riparian thickets along ponds and streams. Often shaded by larger trees and shrubs.

Elderberry is a fast grower excellent for a native hedge but is a short-lived perennial with root masses producing new shoots. To keep in plants in check in small home gardens, we recommend cutting your Elderberry bush back to the ground every 2-3 years.
